The night had started as it generally did every month.  He finished his last bit of paperwork at Prosperity, reminded the staff that he wouldn't be in for the next three nights, and headed home.  He got home just before the sun went down, which gave him a chance to make sure that everything was fine around the trailer before he felt the need to shift.

That went as it usually did, although recently he'd been carefully folding his clothes and putting them in a box on his porch after he took them off.  That was Biffy's influence, and it was a good one.  Once he was Dean's shape, he'd started off into the woods sniffing and snuffling at all the new creatures and scents that had been through recently.    There was something tempting in a direction he didn't usually go, so he followed his nose to a clearing.  The house in the clearing was new and smelled strange.  The human part of his mind was suspicious, but the canine part wasn't as cautious.   He nibbled a bit of house that had fallen on the floor, tasted that it was very sweet, almost too sweet, then continued on his way for the night.  There were rabbits to chase and not catch, after all.

He was exhausted and happy to have run all night in his other skin when the sky started to lighten the next morning. He trotted back to his clearing to wait for the sun to come up so he could shift back.   He'd expected to shift as soon as the sun was over the horizon, but he didn't.  More precisely, he couldn't.  No matter what he did or thought or tried, he couldn't change back to human.  He tired himself out even more trying it, and it still didn't work.  It'd never been hard to shift, not since he first started doing it.  He'd picture the other shape and then he was that shape.    He whined in confusion and dismay, then decided to try to take a nap on the porch.  Not only was he tired from a night of running and then trying to shift but not being able to do it, he always shifted when he slept.

He woke up a few hours later with the sun high in the sky, but he was still Dean's shape.  And he still couldn't shift back to human.  He tried again, twice as hard as he'd tried this morning, and it was no good.

Well, this was going to be a hell of a lot of hassle for however long it lasted.
